MATERIAL B
The technology developed by KUORI, based on Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), offers a groundbreaking solution for creating 100% biobased and fully biodegradable shoe soles. PHAs are natural polymers produced by microorganisms, making them a sustainable alternative to traditional petroleum-based materials. KUORI’s innovative approach tailors PHAs to exhibit elastomeric properties, similar to conventional rubber, while maintaining complete biodegradability. This means that at the end of their lifecycle, the shoe soles can naturally break down in the environment, reducing plastic waste and environmental impact. Supported by InnoSuisse and resulting from an EUREKA project, this technology is designed to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly materials in the footwear industry. KUORI is focused on scaling up production to industrial levels, aiming to bring this sustainable material to market soon. By offering a high-performance, biodegradable alternative, KUORI is paving the way for a greener future in shoe manufacturing and beyond.
